December 28th and 29th, 2006 - Canes @ Sabres AND vs. Ducks: Random Musings and Observations

When this season is all said and done, and people ask me why was I so frustrated with my Canes at times during it, I will simply point towards these past couple of weeks and say "That's why.".

As delighted as I've been with the Canes' five game winning streak and saving Festivus and Christmas in the process, I have found it a little hard to be enthused, because, well, it's not like the Canes beat a Buffalo or an Anaheim during all of that. They played the dismal Flyers, and the mediocre Lightning, Islanders, and Panthers (twice). Ok, I realize that the Islanders have been a little more than mediocre as of late, BUT they are still highly beatable...as proven by the Canes finally beating them 5-1, making for the best game during the streak AND quite possibly the best game of the season.

That said, if there was anyone the Canes should have pulverized, it's the Flyers. It pains me to see the rest of the League killing the orange and black ones, AND the Canes barely eek out a 2-1 win. So yeah, as evidenced by the above rant, I'm still bitter about that.

BUT ANYWAY, regarding these past two games...the Canes can't beat the second League-best Buffalo, but they can run/skate with AND beat the League-best Anaheim?! I wouldn't go as far as saying that's wacked...BUT, I will go as far as saying that if the Canes had played the game they played against the (Mighty) Ducks, they may not have been swept by the Swords and/or could have at least made Thursday's game score a little more respectable than it was.

- Admittedly, I didn't really watch a whole lot of the Canes @ Sabres game, because DirecTV gave me the Sabres MSG feed, as predicted, thanks to it being an away game.

Thanks to Turner South no longer existing, the MSG Buffalo crew is now officially my pick for the most excruciatingly annoying broadcast team, at least for this season. I can't decide who grates on my nerves more: The play-by-play announcer who makes Howard Cosell and Brent Musburger sound rather tolerable, even if combined together in some mad scientist's experiment; OR Rob Ray, who immediately makes me clamour for Tripp Tracy and his prattlings about food and groins.

Note to the Canes: Don't give the/a color commentating job to an ex-goon. At least an ex-goon like RR, anyway.

- After last night's game, it's actually funny AND ironic that I compare Rob Ray and Tripp...y'see, RR is the ice level color commentator for the Sabres, and Tripp got a taste of the same position last night while the Canes bouted with the Ducks. Things that make you go hmmmmm...could it be that John Forslund is getting a new partner in the booth soon? Guess we'll find out on a future episode of "As the Storm Turns".

- Don't worry Brindy worshipers, I have not forgotten about your golden boy's big night...

Last night was Rod Brind'Amour Night, during which, Brindy was honored for reaching the 1,000 point mark a few games ago. Many congrats to the guv'nor.

That led to a nitpick that, really, will be no different from my gripings about the beginning of the second and third period interviews with Laviolette and McCarthy, respectfully...so, you've been warned.

John, Tripp, and FSN South, ever since 2002, everybody, their brother, sister, and cousin throughout the Caniac Nation had Brindy pegged to be the next Captain after Ronnie Francis, and therefore practically knew he would eventually be Captain. There was absolutely no need to make it sound like Rod had to win a freakin' lottery to get the position.

I swear I lost count of how many times I uttered "(Brindy) was SLATED to be Captain!!" to the TV during that moment.

And hey, what do I know? Especially since I was not in Lavy's head when he made the decision in 2005. BUT, if Brindy still wasn't a gimme for the Captainancy by then, color me highly surprised.

- It *still* scares me that the two absolute best teams in the League are the ones already wearing Reebok's proposed buttugly jerseys for the remainder of the League, which are supposed to make their grand debut at the All-Star Game/Event later next month.

Then again, what we are seeing the Sabres and Ducks wearing are apparently mere prototypes. 'Cause even though the jerseys have that form-fitting look to them (at least they do to me), the Ducks and Sabres look comfortable wearing them. That cannot be said for one of the Ducks' neighbors to the north, who got to try out the new duds recently.

I was getting ready to post a quote or two from that article, but there are too many good ones in there...making me prompt you to read the article ASAP. It's nice to know that we fans aren't the only ones who feel the new streamlined and form-fitting "jerseys" are going to be crap. Unfortunately, a player made it clear that he thought the new "jerseys" are ok...hint: He used to be a Teddybear. That said, when I read his comment, I was not surprised. But other than him, I don't think his teammates know what to think overall.

I will conclude by saying what gives me hope about the new "jerseys" not having a long life is remembering how the "Cooperalls" a.k.a. hockey pants in the early 80's were promoted as THE new look for NHLers, only to barely last a season.

At the Risk of Further Giving All of the Hockey Bloggers Who Link To Me Fits...

...no Random Musings and Observations for last night's Canes game vs. the Panthers 'cause FSN South AND FSN Florida/Sunshine Sports did not have said game in their broadcasting contract, bless their wittle hearts. And on top of that, as much as I love Chuck and the Letter K AND respect all he has done in the NHL/hockey radio broadcasting universe, there's something about when I listen to him that disrupts the Canes' mojo. And we just can't have that, especially right now, can we?

But, I was never bored...thanks to the big gift somewhat mentioned in the previous post: My Nintendo Revolu...er, Wii. AND my brother's Wii too...which will be covered in une momento, por favor.

In what has to be the most time I have spent with a video game system since, well, my playing Tales of Symphonia (GREAT GAME!!) on the Gamecube during the very end of last year/very beginning of this year, I am already very much in love with the Wii, its capabilities, AND ESPECIALLY the workout you can get from playing with it.

Like almost everybody else in Wii-Land, I have been getting my first Wii kicks from the Sports Package that accompanies the system. And it's been one sport that has been dominant over the others whenever I take on the Wii-mote...bowling. As someone who used to be in a Youth Bowling League, and was pretty danged good too, before a gawdawful slump hit me and made me quit after putting up with it for a couple of seasons; bowling was the obvious first pick out of the sports to try.

Well, I LOVE the bowling game...and as someone obviously very well familiar with the sport, I can safely say that it is a very well crafted game AND quite possibly the best sport in the Package. But, that's not to say that the rest of the Sports Package is chopped liver. The Package as a whole is a FANTASTIC idea on Nintendo's part, especially with all of the message board and blog posts I've read about how the Sports Package has brought families together, even the members who usually don't care for video games. I've read about even grandparents trying the bowling, golf, AND EVEN boxing games!! Now, PlayStation/Sony fanatics, PLEASE tell me how the PS3 could surpass the Wii in the regard of what I just mentioned, in addition to the price AND EVEN gameplay. PLEASE?!

Speaking of the PS3 vs. Wii wars...when watching my brother play Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on his Wii last night, in addition to ogling the *very impressive* graphics, we kept talking about how the critics have to be smoking or drinking something good(bad?) to say that the Wii's graphics are "ok, but they just don't compare to the (insert PS3 or X-Box 360 here)". Such talk makes the Wii's currently outselling the PS3 two to one all the more hilarious AND great...the better system is winning, whether some like it or not.

But, back to the Sports Package...my only real complaint about it is that Nintendo left off two sports that could have worked quite well: Hockey and Fencing. Hockey could have been handled rather simply...just do a suped up version of that "Rapid Shot" game that was on Mickey D's Canadian site during 2002-03. Afterall, the controls would have been no different from those for Golf. And, as for Fencing, if you can control Link's sword in Zelda, then why not Fencing? That would have been awesome practice/warm-up for the sword handling in Zelda.

Another thing worth mentioning before I finally wrap up here is that the "Miis" are way more fun than I initially thought they'd be. Simply put, "Miis" are Nintendo's equivalent of Fisher-Price's Little People. When I was doing plenty of reading about the Wii, especially upon knowing I was getting one for Christmas, I wrote off the "Miis" as being something cute to attract kids and teenyboppers into Wii-Land. BIG MISTAKE. "Miis" are wonderful for showing off your fandoms on your system, in addition to the name you give your system in its own type-in box. (Guess what I named my Wii? Ten guesses... ;D) Already in the last couple of days, I've made Miis of the following people and characters...

Rod Brind'Amour
Mike Commodore (Complete with red afro!!)
Dr. Frasier Crane
Martin Crane
Dr. Niles Crane
Roz Doyle
Alphonse Elric (Pre-"Bringing Back Mother" Accident)
Edward Elric
Ron Francis
Dr. Gregory House
Inuyasha (New Moon/Human Form)
Kagome
Howie Mandel
Miroku
Daphne Moon
Hiro Nakamura
Jeff O'Neill
Penn and Teller
Sango
Shippou (Without his fox ears and tail, of course.)
Eric Staal

And THOSE are just the tip of the iceberg...I have plans to create:

More past and present Canes players.
Past and present Pittsburgh Penguins players.
Hartford Whalers players.
John Forslund
Tripp Tracy
Chuck Kaiton
Don Cherry (if only one of the "favorite colors" you could choose was plaid...)
Dr. House's "Ducklings"
The Fantastic Four (Instead of The Thing, I'll create his human form.)
The Mythbusters
Jerry Seinfeld and Friends
Larry David
Ron Burgundy and His Newsteam
Street Fighter characters
Link and Zelda

I'll go ahead and beat you to the hunch: Yes, I have absolutely no life, what-so-ever.

But seriously, it's awesome AND frightening at the same time how endless the possibilities are with the Miis. If we're not careful, they could take over the world... o_O

;)

And the only reason I've gotten into creating so many of the little things? I get a hoot out of seeing the motley crews pulling for me from the seating area of my bowling lane. Only on the Wii will you see Frasier, Brindy, and Inuyasha pulling for you one game, and then Commie, Dr. House, and the host of Deal Or No Deal the next game.

Again, I'll beat you to the hunch: Yes, I have absolutely no life, what-so-ever. But, that shouldn't stop you from getting what is quite the technological wonder when you can.

Happy Christmas!

First things, first...as promised at the beginning of the month, the pictures of both my family and I's trees, both decorated by me, myself, and I.

Got to kick off my festivities through watching an "encore presentation" (original presentation being two weeks ago in my home's "Great Room", a combination of the kitchen and living room) of Gremlins with commentary from the cast AND the deleted scenes with even more cast commentary. This turned out to be even more of a hoot that I imagined it to be...

- Zach Galligan is my new favorite guilty pleasure actor...actually, I don't think I really had a favorite guilty pleasure actor before that statement. But yes, I couldn't help but love Zach, his geekiness, and his comments throughout the picture.

And the fact that in Gremlins, he looked like a young Hartford-era Ronnie Francis, except for the clefted chin, certainly didn't hurt either. ;D

- What made Gremlins' cast commentary different from the rare other cast commentaries to which I've listened is the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 quality it had in parts. Galligan's comments *really* added to that feel. Come to think of it, Galligan and Joe Dante (the director) were the only ones *really* getting into doing the commentary. Coming in second place was Howie Mandel (the voice of Gizmo and a few gremlins), who, along with Galligan, was not afraid to make fun of certain aspects of Gremlins AND the commentary itself. Third place was Phoebe Cates...and that was only made possible thanks to Galligan, who had to constantly jog Cates' memory AND vocal chords. Last place was Dick Miller, whose presence in the commentary really baffled me...yeah, he was/is a good actor and all, but it was not like he had a super-huge part other than his character mentioning that he believed in gremlins.

- I was not the least bit surprised that Dante said his most favorite part of the movie was the one that drags the most...where Cates' character explains to Galligan's character why she hates Christmas. It can't be a Dante movie without some sort of sucky part...even with Steven Spielberg's supervision.

- Whenever Howie Mandel used his Gizmo voice...I kept thinking more of Bobby from Bobby's World than Gizmo. And that's not helped by the fact that Howie admitted to using the same voice for Gizmo, Bobby, and imitating children during his stand-up comedy act.

Overall, in addition to the Gremlins movie itself, I highly recommend the cast commentary for sci-fi/fantasy film lovers, geeks, and/or people who just want some totally different Christmas viewing. Yes, after all of that, I *do* consider Gremlins a Christmas movie. Hey, quit looking at me like that...

December 19th, 2006 - Canes @ Flyers: Random Musings and Observations

- Y'know, the Grinch in me *really* wants to gripe about how the Canes should have pulverized the Eastern Conference worst Flyboys. BUT, on the other hand, the angel in me wants to just say that hey, the Canes got two points, and that's better than no points at all.

- John and Tripp AND FSN South...I may not get your feed all the time, no thanks to DirecTV and their version of Center Ice. But I've watched your feed enough over the last season and a third to know that it is absolutely no shock what-so-ever when you get Peter Laviolette to take two-three minutes out for his beginning of the second period "fireside chat". So that said, stop acting like you barely got Pete to stop and address us Caniacs on the current issues he (supposedly) went over with the Canes in the locker room.

And let's not even get into why the heck Kevin "Kato" McCarthy is doing "fireside chats" at the beginning of the third period... o_O

- Did John and Tripp switch bodies? Here I was all ready to hear Tripp drool over Philly's finest steak and cheese...and instead, it was John doing that!! o_O

I *had* to make sure Rod Serling didn't magically appear in my room or on the TV screen...

- Speaking of the Canes staffers...very, VERY GLAD to see Chris Huffine and his day with Lord Stanley get acknowledged during tonight's game. As I have noted somewhat constantly, I somewhat knew Chris when I lived in Raleigh/Wake Forest, thanks to his wife(!! It's VERY belated, but CONGRATULATIONS on the marriage, Chris!!) who work(ed?) as a receptionist for my family chiropractor. And he is every bit the wonderful person they make him out to be whenever he gets mentioned during a broadcast. Once again, and it can never be said enough, CONGRATULATIONS to Chris on being the first ever native North Carolinian to get their name on the Stanley Cup.

Because of that, I just may have to keep this game on tape.

- I'm starting to feel like the FSN South feed is teasing me with that damned creepy Gizmo-voiced "Brindy! Brindy! Brindy!" commercial...tonight's game was the third or fourth one in a row where they waited until the last five minutes to play that thing.

A Brief Review of... Happy Feet

Yes, I finally saw the movie with the dancing penguins "that somehow made #1 for two weeks" according to a bunch of people and Best Week Ever.

Well, I have to say that Happy Feet's being numero uno for those two weeks AND numero dose last week was *very well deserved*.

Now, even though I really like/love penguins (not just the hockey team in Pittsburgh, but also the birds they're named after) AND music, I went into this movie with rather low expectations. Thinking that its worthiness would lie in the cleverly animated penguins, and there being not much of a plot. Boy, was I ever wrong. There is a plot, and it makes you actually feel for Mumble, the lead penguin and character, voiced by Elijah Wood.

While the plot was much better than I expected it to be, I don't want to give away too much since the gist of this is I want you to see the picture. ;D BUT, I will also say that the main stars of the picture were the animation, music. AND ESPECIALLY some of the voices. If I had to pick an absolute favorite voice, and it would not be an easy task, I'd probably have to go with Hugh Jackman, and his very, VERY appropriate Elvis Presley voice for Memphis, the penguin who fathered Mumble. Though, Robin Williams' soul/preacher man voice for Lovelace, the narrating Rockhopper Penguin, runs an extremely close second.

As for the music...all I will say is that if it doesn't get your toes a'tappin' at least once, then you are truly not human. Loved, ABSOLUTELY LOVED the combination of genres represented, from funk ("Tell Me Something Good"), old school rap ("The Message"), 80's (Prince's "Kiss"), disco ("Boogie Wonderland"), and even classic rock ("Somebody To Love" and The Beatles' "The End"). As a matter of fact, I just might have to add the CD of the soundtrack to
my (greedily huge) Amazon Wish List.

So yes, go see this movie while it's still in theatres...you won't regret it, trust me.

December 15th and 16th, 2006 - Canes vs. the Leafs AND @ the Lightning: Random Musings and Observations

- The most glaring similarities between these two games: The officials (Don't believe me? Check out
here and there), the opponents being ones the Canes should beat, said teams having dark blue as one of their colors, the games starting at 7:30 (highly unusual in the instance of the Canes/Leafs game...usually, 7:30 games at the RBC Center are reserved for Sunday nights), and both games being decided by one goal.

- Beef O'Bailey's looks like a darn good place to eat and drink.

- The only reason the Canes managed to win tonight, despite trying their darndest to give away the game in the last minute of the third? Cam Ward. I kept checking to make sure he wasn't wearing Mickey Mouse ears and sneaking in a "Here I am to save the day!!" during the more quiet moments of the game.

As a matter of fact, Cam was also the reason the Canes actually made it a game against the Leafs. If it weren't for the Wardo, the Canes, not the Ranjerks, would have been lit up like Christmas trees.

All that said, the rest of the Canes need to learn a thing or two or three from Wardo about actually playing hockey, ESPECIALLY for sixty minutes.

- Some people can complain about the officiating all they want...but folks, the Canes' struggles are their own fault, NOT Kerry Fraser and Co.'s. Fraser and all did alright in my book...I did not see a call I did not disagree with. The sad truth of the matter, especially in the Leafs game, AND REALLY, the season overall, is that the Canes have a tendency to be highly undisciplined. And to add insult to that injury, certain Canes are acting like children ice skating for the very first time AND finding out that their Christmas presents don't have batteries included. Nobody sums that up better than VinnieBagADonuts at The Score Boards...

"I do have a couple of issues with the calls they DIDN'T make, but after the Cole non-call (the right call, IMO), the Canes complicated things by whining incessantly and diving all over the place. Eric Staal spent more time falling on the ice than TinkerBell in the Disney Princess show last week. He got called for one dive, and could've easily gotten No. 2 on the final offensive zone faceoff of the night.

Carolina was stupid and lazy last night, and then compounded that problem by being whiny and arrogant. Nice work boys.

I have some advice for them. Shut up and skate. No way the Leafs belong in a run-and-gun game with us. If we just shut up and skate, like we did last year, we beat them 95 times out of 100, regardless of who officiates. Why exactly are they trying to get calls, anyhow? Aren't they like 5% lately on the PP? Shut up and skate."

Forget "Whatever It Takes" nowadays..."Shut Up and Skate" should be the new locker room slogan. Taking notes, Lavy? I sure as heck hope you are if you want to win with "the players you got in the room".

Current Music: "Something About Christmas Time" by Bryan Adams

Edit as of 3:50 PM: Many are noting how well Keith Aucoin played last night...especially in the faceoff circle...according to the Raleigh News and Observer:

With the Hurricanes struggling in the faceoff circle, he went 7-for-9 in Friday's loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Former Hurricanes captain Ron Francis was in Albany last weekend in his new player-development role and gave Aucoin a 20-minute tutorial in the faceoff circle. Those lessons paid immediate dividends. Aucoin was 3-for-4 on Saturday.

Ah...the power of Ron Francis.

To say those games were/are an insult to Nintendo AND the Legend of Zelda franchise is putting it quite mildly...they make Majora's Mask look like a freakin' masterpiece. o_O

The Latest In Ronnie-Land

First, all is going quite well for Ron Francis with his Director of Player Development job...
this article tells about how appreciated he is up in River Rat Country...

ALBANY -- The questions have come quick from the veteran Albany River Rats, as well as the rookies. They want to hear stories that only Ron Francis can tell. They want to hear advice and suggestions from Francis, who ended his playing days No. 4 on the National Hockey League's all-time scoring list.

Francis, 43, is director of player development for the Carolina Hurricanes, one of the NHL parent clubs for the River Rats. He came into town Wednesday night and will be here through tonight's game with the Springfield Falcons.

Thursday, he was on the ice with the Rats for practice. He was showing some moves around the goalie, looking very much like a guy who still could be playing.

But, after 23 seasons, 549 goals, 1,249 assists and 1,798 points, he knew it was time to go. And it isn't so bad when the guys ahead of you on the all-time list are named Gretzky, Howe and Messier.

"I was comfortable moving on," said Francis, who lives in Raleigh, N.C. "I have no desire to go out there and play. I can walk in the rink in Raleigh or here and enjoy a game as a fan."

Francis played with the Hartford Whalers (one of his teammates was Rats coach Tom Rowe), Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina and the Toronto Maple Leafs before retiring on Sept. 14, 2005.

After some time away, he came back to the game and now shares his knowledge with players in the Carolina organization. He also checks in on junior hockey players around the country.

"I don't go out there looking for respect from any of these guys," Francis said. "I know what these guys are trying to accomplish. I was fortunate enough to play in the NHL for a long time. I know these guys want to get there; some of them have been there and want to get back. I am just here to try and help them."

Rowe encourages all his players -- even those who are affiliated with the Colorado Avalanche -- to pick Francis' brain while the future Hall of Famer is here.

"He is here to see what guys here can help the big club," Rowe said. "This is great for our guys to have him here. When you have a Hall of Famer in your midst, you definitely want to take advantage of it."

Francis is expected to be back in Albany before Christmas and will make trips here at other times during the season.

"He knows what it takes to be in the NHL," said Rats forward Keith Aucoin, who has spent some time there. "We have to use this as an advantage and ask him questions. We all want to get to the next level. He's been there."

It should be noted that after Ron's spending time with them, the Rats went on to win their next game with not only four goals, BUT ALSO a shutout. Further proof of how you should never underestimate the power of #10.

For those of you who may have forgotten about Ron's other job besides the one he holds with the Canes, TrustAtlantic finally got the profiles for their directors up on their official site. And Ronnie's looking quite sharp in his.

Last, but certainly not least: Despite not covering ice hockey as a "major sport" (I.E. it only gets brief mention on ESPN News), ESPeeN has got a deal up on their site where you get to pick your four most ultimate lines ever in NHL history. And yes, Francis is among the various greats, past and present, you can pick.

My top line? Some hints...

1. Well...you know who I had to include. ;)

2. The Penguins are my second favorite team, overall AND historically.

and

3. If one linemate had been more healthy and the other had not turned out to be such an ego*, they could have given the same period in time's "Legion of Doom" quite a run for their money, if they did not already do that.

November 11th, 2006 - Canes @ Avalanche AND Overall West Coast Roadtrip: Random Musing/Observation

http://loltoolchest.ytmnd.com/

Harry and Marv represent your and my Carolina Hurricanes, and the (lol) toolchest represents the Flames, Oilers, Canucks, and Avs.

Really, why waste a ton of words...when that sums up the Canes' overall disaster of roadtrip beautifully? *sighs*

December 8th, 2006 - Canes @ Canucks: Random Musing/Observation

What my eyes beheld tonight was something different, fantastic, hilarious, horrible, scary, chilling, imaginative, funny, colorful, cute, ingenious, awful, charming, trashy, frightening, and just simply wonderful.

Not to mention how that something was the best two hours I've spent in awhile.

Thank you, Canes, for letting me know that my decision to watch my recently purchased Gremlins DVD* was the darned best decision that I could make tonight.

Current Music: "My Favorite Things" by John Coltrane

* - As much as I knock the "Brindy! Brindy! Brindy!" commercial, it's good for at least one thing...

** - I know I missed a dynamite third period. But really, the way the Canes played in the majority of the game, they don't deserve the point they somehow got.

November 6th, 2006 - Canes @ Oilers: Random Musings and Observations

(Skipped last night's game 'cause to quoteth William Shakespeare...all the world is indeed a stage, AND THE CANES PLAYED LIKE CRAP!!

And, I was practically a zombie due to having get up really, REALLY early because of renovation work being done on my family and I's house.)

- I'm cutting to the chase on one thing made VERY BLATANT throughout this game...Mick McGeough ROYALLY SUCKS as a ref. Forget Mike Hasenfratz, I got a new numero uno most hated ref.

Unfortunately, I am not surprised that Magoo called things the way he did tonight...highly considering how he did not want to anger up the Oil faithful's blood more than he already did in
a certain incident earlier this season. But geez Louise...was trying to make nice with the Oil more important than blowing a VERY OBVIOUS high sticking call (which should have been four minute of PP time for the Canes...as indicated by a very bloody Mike Commodore)? Then again, what the heck am I saying? We are talking about a ref who is so dramatic when he is criticized that he might as well don a Cowardly Lion costume or something similar, and belt out that horrible "King of the Forest" song.

- At first, I was highly enthralled to get The John and Tripp Show tonight, especially after having to put up with ESPeeN Full Court/Radio for about thirty-forty minutes into the game. But then, the thrill started going when John and Tripp constantly sang the praises of the Oilers. It can never be said enough: John and Tripp, I do admire how, unlike a certain Buffalo announcer with his team, you two try not to be complete Canes homers in your coverage. BUT, when the 60-70% bias starts leaning more in favor of the team playing other than the Canes, that's where I start to get a little annoyed.

Of course, I guess I'll give John and Tripp a free pass tonight, considering how it was/still is hard to overly compliment the Canes right now.

- Speaking of that, I couldn't help but be easily amused by how the "Bold Move of the Game" (fancy term du jour for the best highlight of the game, for those of you not in Canesland one way or another) was a move by Justin Williams that resulted in an Oil goal. While I think the "Bold Move" should have been Craig Adams' goal...usually, team broadcasts try to put on a positive spin one way or another...at the same time, I think Willy's "bold move" beautifully sums up tonight's affair in a concise manner.

- As if tonight wasn't already horrid enough, Rod Brind'Amour did not even play in the third period. To quote J. Forslund: "Rod did not report to Coach Laviolette."...and later, it was revealed that a lower body injury is what's keeping #17 hampered. More will be revealed here tomorrow or in a couple of days...

- Speaking of El Capitan, just when I thought a certain Canes commercial had finally been pulled...Gizmo's cries of "Brindy! Brindy! Brindy!" came back with a vengeance in the remaining five minutes of the "game", resulting in yours truly making a noise similar to this.

Cory Stillman Activated From IR

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=187149

Even though the Canes have been winning lately, Cory is much needed. But, will it get me killed to say that right now, I wish he was a defenseman instead of a winger...?

And it may be off-topic, but I gotta mention the following...tonight, I watched Under the Mistletoe on Lifetime (Shut up). And it turned out to not only be a Christmas ghost story flick (which was what reeled me in via the ads during one of my morning Frasier fixes), but also technically a hockey flick, especially with a few sequences and the ending!! AND, it came complete with a CAROLINA HURRICANES POSTER (circa 2001-02, unless my eyes were deceiving me), along with a ton of other hockey goodies, in the son of the ghost's room. That was a ton of icing on the cake that was a for once pretty decent Lifetime movie, knowing how those things usually are.

Whether or not you agree with his calls, you just gotta love dudeman's sense of humor. Many, many kudos to TSN for displaying that.

And yes, I will miss seeing Fraser's uncannily immaculate hair skating around on the ice.

December 2nd, 2006 - Canes vs. Bruins: Random Musings and Observations

- I may dislike Nickelback with the passion of ten suns, but hey, if they give Cam Ward the luck and confidence to win games via his helmet/mask, then I certainly cannot complain about that much.

- Perhaps Eric Staal reads this here place...I make one crack about him (seemingly) having more penalty minutes than points as of the game vs. Montreal, and he goes and gets two goals tonight. That's much more like it Staalsy...see what happens when you keep your a** out of the box? ;)

- The NESN guys set themselves up for Justin Williams' shorthanded goal...it was quite easy to see coming, as much as they kept flashing the graphic about AND mentioning the top shorthanded scoring teams in the NHL.

- Speaking of NESN, who were not at all bad or annoying tonight, much to my delight...I cannot help but be jealous of the fact that they do fun TV programs with both present and past Bruin players. I think the Canes could take a cue or two from that...and while I'm at it, they need to bring back that Saturday/Sunday morning show that ran through the 2001-02 season. But obviously, it would feature Peter Laviolette instead of Paul Maurice...

Christmas Time Is Here Again!!

Yes, tis the time of the year for my second most favorite holiday behind Halloween. Just like then, my (greedily huge) Amazon Wish List is VERY RIPE for picking for those of you interested in getting yours truly a gift or two. :D Also ripe for picking are my Card and Stuff Want Lists over at Dieci, my Ron Francis collection site.

Most noteworthy aspects of my celebrating the season thus far...

- My mother and I got the family Christmas tree up the earliest we've ever done the task...November 28th. Before that, the earliest we ever had the tree up was maybe two weeks before Christmas. What probably helped was that this year's tree is a brand new one, featuring lights that change back and forth between multi-color and white. It looks FANTASTIC, and even though I plan to eventually post a photo or two, I highly doubt that photos will do the tree (which, I totally decorated while my mother unloaded just about every single decoration we have...including some we have never used before!!) justice.

- My official Christmas icon for this year over at LiveJournal and at a few message boards is one featuring Link, Zelda, and Agahnim/Ganon wishing all a Merry Christmas, in honor of the fact that my big gift from my folks this year will be a Nintendo Wii. :D

- Last but certainly not least for now...my Christmas playlist, featuring nostalgic favorites and ecelectic versions of traditional tunes. New additions are in bold, additions I hope to have are in italics, AND the playlist is now separated into themes...
